The Eternal Scales of Truth and Justice
In ancient Egypt there existed a powerful goddess whose influence still echoes through the ages. Her name was Maat, the embodiment of cosmic order, truth, balance, harmony, justice and righteousness itself.
As the daughter of Ra, the radiant sun god, Maat's very name meant "that which is straight" - a reflection of the unwavering principles she upheld. She was depicted as a woman of grace, adorned with the striking plume of an ostrich feather upon her head. This feather, light as air yet unbending in its straightness, served as her eternal symbol.
Maat presided over the final judgement of souls departing this world. In the Hall of Two Truths, her feather would be carefully balanced against the heart of the deceased on the scales of justice. Only those whose deeds in life had adhered to Maat's sacred codes, whose hearts were as light and true as her feather, could pass into the eternal paradise of the Field of Reeds.
Maat did not merely represent abstract virtues, but a comprehensive moral philosophy to live by. Her 42 ideals, or "negative confessions", outlined a righteous path - to speak truth, deal justly, honor harmony, uphold balance, maintain order, act with propriety, and give and receive fairly.
Followers vowed to never act deceitfully, guilefully or arrogantly. They pledged to cause no harm, make no hasty judgments, steal nothing, and remain humble servants of these high principles.
